USGS scientists have been investigating the recent increase in the number of magnitude 3 and greater earthquakes in the midcontinent of the United States. Beginning in 2001, the average number of earthquakes occurring per year of magnitude 3 or greater increased significantly, culminating in a six-fold increase in 2011 over 20th century levels.
An increase in earthquakes such as this prompts an important question: are they natural, or man-made? To address this question, a team of USGS scientists analyzed changes in the rate of earthquake occurrence in the midcontinent using large USGS databases of earthquakes recorded since 1970.
~ It’s ‘FRACKING’ Stupid.
USGS’s studies do not suggest that hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as “fracking,” causes the increased rate of earthquakes. USGS’s scientists have found, however, that at some locations the increase in seismicity coincides with the injection of wastewater in deep disposal wells.
The very next line contradicts:
In preliminary findings, our scientists cite a series of examples for which an uptick in seismic activity is observed in areas where the disposal of wastewater through deep-well injection increased significantly. These areas tend to be in the middle of the country – mostly in Colorado, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Ohio.
A bit further down:
We also have previously reported that the production of oil and gas (extraction) can potentially cause earthquakes when changes in the underground stresses created by the removal of large volumes of oil, gas or water are large enough.
Our scientists then took a closer look at earthquake rates in regions where energy production activities have changed in recent years. To learn more about their findings, please visit Deputy Secretary of the (DOI) Department of the Interior David Hayes’ blog post here.
Call Fluid Injection WTH it truly means! FRACKING!

You can environmentally do that well or you can environmentally do it poorly. If you do it poorly you use up the water aquifer, you create in some cases, the argument is, earthquakes, a whole lot of things. – Right Scoop
An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 was reported on Mexico’s Pacific Coast on Wednesday, following on the heels of a major but lesser quake off the coasts of Oregon and California (This event has been deleted after review by a seismologist), but not on our map.
The Mexican earthquake reportedly was centered in a sparsely populated area in the mountains of western Mexico but still caused tall buildings to sway more than 200 miles away in Mexico City.
People evacuated some buildings in the capital, but the city government said helicopter flights had detected no signs of damage. Authorities in Michoacan state, where the tremor was centered, also had no immediate reports of damage.
A quake of this magnitude is considered a major earthquake, but this one hit about 41 miles below the surface and a tremor’s power to cause damage is often dissipated when it is so deep.
The magnitude 5.9 earthquake off the U.S. coast struck about 160 miles west-northwest of the coastal city of Bandon, Ore., with no reports of damage.
Doug Gibbons of the U.S. Geological Survey says the earthquake is not related to two massive earthquakes in Indonesia on Wednesday.
No tsunami warnings have been issued at this time for the North American quakes.

President Barack Obama said the White House proposed “Buffet Rule” could be named the “Reagan Rule,” referring to former Republican President Ronald Reagan as a “wild-eyed, Socialist, tax hiking class warrior.”
“This president gave another speech where he said it was ‘crazy’ — that’s a quote — that certain tax loopholes make it possible for multimillionaires to pay nothing, while a bus driver was paying 10 percent of his salary,” Obama said at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building Wednesday. “That wild-eyed, socialist, tax-hiking class warrior was Ronald Reagan.”
Obama floated the idea of renaming the “Buffet Rule,” which would require individuals making over $1 million annually to pay at least 30 percent in federal income taxes.
“If it’ll help convince folks in Congress to make the right choice, we could call it the ‘Reagan Rule’ instead of the ‘Buffett Rule,’” Obama said.
“The largest domestic natural gas drilling boom in history has swept across the United States. The Halliburton-developed drilling technology of “fracking” or hydraulic fracturing has unlocked a “Saudia Arabia of natural gas” just beneath us. But is fracking safe? When filmmaker Josh Fox is asked to lease his land for drilling, he embarks on a cross-country odyssey uncovering a trail of secrets, lies and contamination. A recently drilled nearby Pennsylvania town reports that residents are able to light their drinking water on fire. This is just one of the many absurd and astonishing revelations of a new country called GASLAND. Part verite travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part bluegrass banjo meltdown, part showdown.”
In May 2008, Josh Fox received a letter from a natural gas company offering to lease his family’s land in Milanville, Pennsylvania for $100,000 to drill for gas. Following the lease offer, he looked for information about natural gas drilling in the Marcellus Shale under large parts of Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and West Virginia. He visited Dimock, Pennsylvania where natural gas drilling was already taking place. In Dimock, he met families able to light their tap water on fire as well as suffering from numerous health issues and fearing their well water had been contaminated.
~Today I will concentrate on Pennsylvania.

Standing on top of one of the world’s largest natural gas fields, some Pennsylvanians prepare to take on their new governor, the gas indusrty, the famous ‘Halliburton Loophole’, and Karl Rove in order to stop the drilling.
It is happening all across America-rural landowners wake up one day to find a lucrative offer from an energy company wanting to lease their property. Reason? The company hopes to tap into a reservoir dubbed the “Saudi Arabia of natural gas.” Halliburton developed a way to get the gas out of the ground-a hydraulic drilling process called “fracking”-and suddenly America finds itself on the precipice of becoming an energy superpower.
SPRINGVILLE TWP. – An explosion at a natural gas compressor station in Susquehanna County blew a hole in the roof of the complex holding the engines, shaking homes as far as a half-mile away and drawing emergency responders from nearby counties.
The 11 a.m. blast at the Lathrop compressor station off Route 29 sent black and gray clouds billowing from the building for several hours, but the damage was contained to the site and no one was injured, said a spokeswoman for Williams Partners LP, which owns the Lathrop station.
The Lathrop station pressurizes and dehydrates natural gas from Marcellus Shale wells in the county for transport through interstate pipelines, including the Tennessee and Transco, which bring the gas to market. The station was sold to Williams by Cabot Oil and Gas Corp. as part of a deal announced in 2010 that also included a second compressor station and 75 miles of the natural gas drilling company’s gathering pipelines.
With the passage of Act 13 of 2012, these kinds of industrial accidents can happen very close to our schools, day care centers, homes, and hospitals. Fracking wells can be placed as close as 300 feet from your home. Compressor stations can be as close as 750 feet from your home – operating at 60 decibels 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Unconventional hydraulic fracturing and Compressor Stations could be located as close as 750 feet from schools and other institutions. Local zoning has been preempted in favor of oil and gas operations – local zoning boards no longer have the authority to keep these industrial activities far enough away from our schools and homes. – concerned_mom_2
A new provision could forbid the state’s doctors from sharing information with patients exposed to toxic fracking solutions.
A provision buried in a law passed last month is drawing scrutiny from the public health and environmental community, who argue that it will “gag” doctors who want to raise concerns related to oil and gas extraction with the people they treat and the general public.
Pennsylvania is at the forefront in the debate over “fracking,”
A more recent article shows how the ‘Fracking industry threatens Pa. mobile home village':
Longtime residents of the 32-unit Riverdale Mobile Home Village in Jersey Shore, Pa., read in the Feb. 18 Williamsport, Pa., Sun-Gazette that their leases were being terminated “immediately” and they would have to move by April 1.
Their park had been sold to Aqua PVR LLC, a subsidiary of Aqua America based in Bryn Mawr, Pa. The company plans to tear down the park to build a water pumping facility for use in gas drilling called fracking.
Bloom noted, “High-volume hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, injects chemical-laced water underground at high pressure — a process with a confirmed current casing failure rate of 6.2 percent in Pennsylvania. Environmental violations occur at a rate of 12 per day at Marcellus Shale gas drilling sites in Pennsylvania.
“The water returns to the surface bearing toxic chemicals, heavy metals, radioactive materials and volatile organic chemicals, which is why it is often trucked away to be re-injected underground, causing a number of earthquakes. No cumulative impact study regarding the life-cycle impacts of fracking has been conducted anywhere in Pennsylvania.”
North Korea on Wednesday announced it was pumping propellant into its long-range rocket “as we speak,” despite repeated international warnings to abandon its plans to fire the rocket into space.
Pyongyang insists the pending takeoff of its liquid-fueled Unha 3 rocket is aimed at placing an observation satellite into rotation around the Earth; its Asian neighbors and the United States view the effort as a cover for another long-range ballistic missile test, which North Korea is prohibited from conducting under U.N. Security Council resolutions.
“We don’t really care about the opinions from the outside,” Korean Committee of Space Technology satellite control center head Paek Chang-ho said. “This is critical in order to develop our national economy.”
North Korea has announced the rocket firing would take place sometime between Thursday and Monday.
North Korea on Tuesday announced that it had made ready to fire a long-range rocket into space, rejecting claims that the satellite launch would be cover for a new ballistic missile test, the Associated Press reported (see GSN, April 9).
The world braces and holds its breath as all signs point to North Korea preparing for a missile test
Space Development Department Deputy Director Ryu Kum Chol at a news briefing in Pyongyang said the Earth-observation satellite was undergoing fitting to the Unha 3 rocket on Tuesday. “All the assembly and preparations of the satellite launch are done,” he said.
Outside specialists think the Unha 3 rocket is a modified version of the North’s Taepodong 2 long-range ballistic missile, which is last assumed to have been tested in spring 2009. Pyongyang is understood to be advancing its ballistic missile development though it is not yet thought to have developed nuclear weapons small enough to be carried by missiles.
Ryu admitted there was a resemblance between the Unha 3 and a ballistic missile but said the satellite-carrying rocket would use liquid fuel rather than the solid fuel employed to power ballistic missiles. He also said the rocket lacked the capacity to carry heavy explosives.
“Our satellite weighs 100 kilograms. For a weapon, a 100-kilogram payload wouldn’t be very effective,” Ryu said, rejecting as “nonsense” international worries that the launch would be used as a ballistic missile test.

“The launch of the Kwangmyongsong 3 satellite is the gift from our people to our great leader, comrade Kim Il Sung, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, so this cannot be a missile test,” Ryu was quoted by Reuters as saying. Kim Il Sung is North Korea’s regime founder and the grandfather of current leader Kim Jong Un (Maxim Duncan, Reuters I, April 10).
In a telephone conversation on Monday, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin agreed that the looming rocket launch would be a “serious provocation and a violation of North Koreas’ international obligations and standing U.N. Security Council resolutions,” according to Defense Department spokesman George Little.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice, shown on April 5, on Monday warned North Korea against conducting its third nuclear test. Recent satellite images indicate the North is preparing for another underground blast
The United States on Monday warned North Korea against carrying out a third nuclear test after new satellite images indicated the isolated nation was close to finishing a new tunnel that could be used in an underground atomic detonation, Reuters reported (see GSN, April 9).
Pyongyang is forbidden under U.N. Security Council resolutions from conducting atomic tests. It has carried out two to date, in 2006 and 2009. Nuclear specialists believe a third test would be aimed at advancing North Korea’s ability to build warheads small enough to be mounted on missiles, according to previous reporting.
North Korea has aggravated the international community with its plans to fire a long-range rocket into space — an action the United States and partner nations have condemned as a violation of Security Council prohibitions on the aspiring nuclear power’s use of ballistic missile technology. The rocket launch is expected to come sometime between April 12 and 16 (see related GSN story, today).
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said a new North Korean nuclear blast “would be equally bad if not worse” than the rocket launch, which Washington sees as a cover for another long-range ballistic missile test.
Nuland would not tell journalists whether the Obama administration possesses information that points to a new atomic trial.
Unidentified South Korean government officials on Sunday told a number of news organizations that satellite pictures taken last week show a growing mound of dirt outside what appears to be a new tunnel at North Korea’s atomic test site (Arshad Mohammed, Reuters, April 10).
“North Korea is digging up a new underground tunnel at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, in addition to its existing two underground tunnels, and it has been confirmed that the excavation works are in the final stages,” according to a South Korean intelligence analysis of the April 1 satellite images.
In what appears to be the latest of many crimes resulting from the Obama Administration’s disastrous Mexican gun-running operation, a federal agent has been indicted for trying to smuggle high-powered weapons and large amounts of ammo south of the border.
The U.S. Border Patrol agent undoubtedly got his idea from a failed government project, dubbed Fast and Furious, that put U.S.-sold weapons in the hands of Mexican drug traffickers. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) ran the once-secret program that allowed guns from the U.S. to be smuggled into Mexico so they could eventually be traced to drug cartels. Instead, federal law enforcement officers lost track of hundreds of weapons which have been used in an unknown number of crimes.
The lost guns have been linked to violence on both sides of the border, including the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent (Brian Terry) in Peck Canyon Arizona. In that case, the guns—assault weapons known as AK-47s—were traced through their serial numbers to a Glendale, Arizona dealer that led to a Phoenix man the feds repeatedly allowed to smuggle firearms into Mexico.
Judicial Watch has sued the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the ATF for Fast and Furious records and has already obtained internal government documents exposing a high number of crimes connected to the experiment. For instance, a Fast and Furious firearm (7.62mm Romarm/Cugir) was involved in aggravated assault against a police officer in Arizona and in Mexico the weapons have been used in a number of violent crimes.
This week’s news of a Homeland Security agent getting busted only adds insult to injury. The Border Patrol officer (Ricardo Montalvo) from El Paso was arrested and charged for buying ammunition and firearms, such as AK-47 pistols, favored by Mexican drug cartels. The idea, according to a federal indictment cited in a news report, was to smuggle the goods to Mexico.
Ironically, the case is being investigated by the ATF, the same federal agency that masterminded the shameful Mexican gun-running operation in the first place. Issued by a grand jury, the 20-count indictment says Montalvo and his girlfriend were engaged in a conspiracy as “straw purchasers” who bought nine firearms, 20,000 rounds of ammunition and four flare launchers.
Facing a June 5th Recall election, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker began a series of campaign stops with a speech in rural Dane County on Tuesday. MacIver News Service’s Bill Osmulski reports from the town of Dane.
Liberals Attack Scott Walker’s Kids…
The left seems to have a really hard time leaving the kids of Republican politicians out of their fits of rage. Yesterday, Governor Scott Walker gave an interview to David Brody of CBN News in which he talked about the anger directed at his teenage sons and also his elderly parents:
I had thousands of people bussed in front of my home in Wauwatosa where I’ve got two high school sons living, and I’ve got parents in [their] 70s. At one point last year, my 16 year old and my mother in her 70s were at a grocery store and got yelled at. I’ve had my kids targeted on Facebook; we’ve had all those sorts of things.
If people want to get together to protest and even yell at the governor, that’s acceptable — but turning that anger on a 16 year old is disgusting. We saw this repeatedly with Gov. Palin a few years ago. Her son Trig and daughters Willow and Bristol were made the butt of jokes both online and on television.
The President’s daughters are off limits for commentary. That’s as it should be. The same should be true for the sons and daughters of Republican politicians. Leftist bullies need to dial back the rage and lay off the kids.
Union factions were successful in forcing a recall election on Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker. With that election scheduled for June 5, they’ve moved their focus to their next target: Michigan’s Republican Governor.
Unions have created a special working class in this country and for too long we’ve allowed them to hold us hostage. This is America and we operate on a free market economic system. We pay for what we use, we don’t take handouts! Unfortunately, the unions and President Obama are in cahoots to transform American into a Nanny State—and together, they’re prepared to spend upwards of a billion dollars to succeed.
Center Vice President Fred Grandy joined Jeff Katz on Talk 1200 Boston to discuss the disturbing details of the recent Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood visit to Washington, and the creeping-shariah threat from the American Muslim Jurists Association (AMJA).
Washington was just “invaded” by terrorists; yet seemingly no one in the Obama Administration cared!
The Muslim Brotherhood, the radical arm of Islam Sharia Law, came to America and they “conquered.”
The Obama administration had to approve their coming. That means State Department Head Hillary Clinton had to give her okay for this Muslim Brotherhood group to come to charm those in Washington, D.C. SHAME ON THEM!!
Support HR 973, Keep Sharia Out of US Courts:
Sharia Law has already infiltrated the United States Courts’ system; and you must help to put a definitive STOP to that.
Florida’s U.S. Rep. Sandy Adams has introduced H.R. 973 which forbids foreign law (including Sharia Law) from our United States court system. Today, Conservative Action Alerts was personally notified by Congresswoman’s Sandy Adams’ staff that in mid-Spring, H.R.973 will be submitted to House Judiciary Committee for “markup.” We are one-step closer to a vote against Sharia Law.
Yet, the White House was okay with terrorists coming to our country! White House Press Secretary Jay Carney explained that this was “the new reality,” with the Muslim Brotherhood becoming the predominant party in the new Egypt!
Throughout the Arab Spring, the Obama Administration has continued to prop up Islamist governments throughout the Middle East, in the supposed name of “freedom.” No way! The Arab Spring has been a disaster for true freedom. The Arab Spring has been a complete VICTORY of radical Islamist groups!
However, this is NOT the first time the Muslim Brotherhood has been treated kindly at the White House!

Muslim Brotherhood motto: “ALLAH IS OUR OBJECTIVE, MUHAMMAD IS OUR PROPHET, THE QUR’AN IS OUR LAW, JIHAD IS OUR WAY, AND DYING IN THE WAY OF ALLAH IS OUR HIGHEST ASPIRATION!”
They represent the new political power in Cairo, and given their performances in public events in Washington last week, the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party has the art of doublespeak nailed.
At two events, four FJP members spoke about dialogue and respect for the West, in comments often at odds with the party line in their home country. They sidestepped controversial issues and tailored their message of dialogue to exclude the party’s extreme positions during an appearance Wednesday at Georgetown University and Thursday at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
They stuck to that theme despite aggressive questions which came mostly from Egyptian secularists.
“We are here to start building bridges with the United States,” said Sondos Asem, the senior editor of the Brotherhood website Ikhwanweb.com and the editor of the group’s Twitter account. She spoke about the FJP’s embrace of “Freedom, Human Dignity, Justice, and Democracy,” as well as her own experiences of being considered a security risk under the Mubarak regime.
But the website she edits, Ikhwanonline.com, has previously burned those bridges with hateful and anti-Western rhetoric. In a statement condemning Osama bin Laden’s death at the hands of American special forces, an article published by Ikhwanonline condoned attacks on foreign forces occupying Muslim lands, including American troops. The article states, “so long as occupation remains resistance is legitimate and it [the Muslim Brotherhood] calls on the United States, NATO and the EU to end the occupation in Afghanistan and Iraq, and recognize the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.”
Abdul Mawgoud Dardery, who serves on the FJP’s foreign relations committee, told the Georgetown audience about his “dream” for a new Egypt. “We have a dream” about providing Egyptians with the necessities and “speaking truth to power,” he said, making reference to Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech.
But Dardery dodged questions about previous comments he had made about Israel and the United States looting Egypt, claiming that what really wanted was a change in American foreign policy. “We cannot forget the Iraq War,” he said, while blaming the American Islamophobia for Middle Eastern hostility towards the West. “It was a wrong decision of oil vs. democracy.”
