ATLANTA — A high-ranking official resigned Tuesday from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast-cancer charity after a dispute over whether the group should give funding to Planned Parenthood, according to a letter obtained by The Associated Press.
Karen Handel, the charity’s vice president for public policy, told Komen officials that she supported the move to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood. She said the discussion started before she arrived at the organization and was approved at the highest levels of the charity.
“I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and my involvement in it,” Handel said in her letter. “I openly acknowledge my role in the matter and continue to believe our decision was the best one for Komen’s future and the women we serve.”
Handel said in the letter that the now-abandoned policy was fully vetted by the Komen organization. Its board did not raise any objections when it was presented with the proposed policy in November, Handel said.
JUST in to FNC: Komen apologizes for recent decisions and will reinstate parenthood funding…Caving in from political pressure from the left!
Susan G. Komen for the Cure announced Friday it was reversing its decision to end grants to Planned Parenthood, after facing mounting pressure from pro-choice lawmakers and accusations that the breast cancer awareness organization had bowed to political influences.
“We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives,” the group said in a statement.
The Senate has added to the pressure on the Susan G. Komen foundation.
Twenty-six Democratic senators today sent a letter to Nancy Brinker, the group’s founder and CEO, urging it to reconsider the decision to cut funding from Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings for the poor.
“It would be tragic if any woman – let alone thousands of women – lost access to these potentially life-saving screenings because of a politically motivated attack,” the letter reads. “We earnestly hope that you will put women’s health before partisan politics and reconsider this decision for the sake of the women who depend on both your organizations for access to the health care they need.”
Komen funding for Planned Parenthood has provided nearly 170,000 clinical breast exams and resulted in 6,400 referrals for mammograms. In 2011 alone, grants from Komen provided Planned Parenthood with roughly $650,000 in funding for breast cancer prevention, screening, and education.
~ Being PP is a private organization they are getting so many donations to replace this funding. THIS is how it’s done in America. These Dim Senators would do good to put their money where their mouth is instead of trying to subjectify women by using this political firestorm for public dependent funding. It is how conservatives live fiscal responsibility! ~ JP
Radical anti-life groups have decided to destroy the Susan G. Komen foundation for daring to challenge the abortionists of Planned Parenthood. The so-called “pro-choice” community targeted the group’s fund-raising and even hacked the Komen website, adding a slogan for the “Race for the Cure,” urging readers to “help us run over poor women on the way to the bank.”
The American icon who founded Susan G. Komen for the Cure has decided to sever the organization’s ties with Planned Parenthood amidst a Congressional investigation into whether the nation’s largest abortion provider uses taxpayer dollars to fund the grotesque practice.
Predictably, this decision has sparked a vicious campaign against Komen by radical leftists – led by the liberal media. From CNN to CBS to MSNBC the media’s campaign of lies and assignation is already well underway.
CBS’s Nancy Cordes claimed the Komen was sacrificing their mission in response to pressure, “there are groups that have an extreme agenda who have been bullying the Komen Foundation”
• In a one-sided report, MSNBC brought on the Planned Parenthood’s President Cecile Richards to attack the Komen foundation (we now fully
understand her commitment to women’s health)
Let the Komen Foundation know that you support them and urge them to stand firm against the liberal media’s campaign of intimidation!
George Soros-funded radical left-wing Moveon.org is mobilizing activists to bully Nancy Brinker and the Komen Foundation into reinstating funding to Planned Parenthood. Not surprisingly, the liberal media is joining in this insidious campaign.
Does this sound like the America you grew up in? A private charity determines that it would be unwise to affiliate with a controversial group embroiled in a Congressional investigation, and as a result it comes under a highly-organized, concerted attack from the Radical Left?
These people are truly shameless.
The Komen Foundation has a clear and noble mission: find a cure for breast cancer. It’s up to them how to spend the money their donors give them. It’s not up to George Soros and the Left-wing media!
It’s clear why the media are lining up to support Planned Parenthood and attack the Komen Foundation, they consider abortion-on-demand to practically be a sacrament.
