WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s first new nuclear power plant in a generation won approval Thursday as federal regulators voted to grant a license for two new reactors in Georgia.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission voted 4-1 to approve Atlanta-based Southern Co.’s request to build two nuclear reactors at its Vogtle site south of Augusta.

The vote clears the way for officials to issue an operating license for the reactors, which could begin operating as soon as 2016 and 2017.

The NRC last approved construction of a nuclear plant in 1978, a year before a partial meltdown of the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania raised fears of a radiation release and brought new reactor orders nearly to a halt.

NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko voted against the Vogtle license, saying he wanted a binding commitment from the company that it would make safety changes prompted by the March 2011 nuclear disaster in Japan.

“We’ve given them a license. They have not given us any commitment they will make these changes in the future,” Jaczko said.

Two top advisers to President Barack Obama — both Catholics — warned him of the potential for controversy over his decision to require religious organizations to cover contraceptives in their health insurance plans.

Vice President Joe Biden and former White House chief of staff Bill Daley both told the president that the decision would be cast as a government intrusion on religious freedom and that it could alienate Catholic voters in swing states, Bloomberg reported Wednesday. The decision has whipped up a frenzy of criticism for the president that he’s been battling since the move went public.

~ So understand THIS. It’s not that Joe or Billy are good Catholics doing this because of their religious beliefs. It is simply a bad political move. And only AFTER the Catholic Church declared War, and ONLY after we all spoke out, as well as the media and radio, did Obama ‘rethink’ his position’. I hope people are smart enough to realize there is NO right safe with THIS administration! ~ JP

The advice coming from Biden and Daley also represented a division among the president’s top advisers, with a group of top women all urging the president to not create an exemption for religious organizations. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, also a Catholic, led the charge, and was backed by several others, including senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and then-Domestic Policy Council Director Melody Barnes.

How long would it take you to change your mind about a core conviction, something you believe in the very fiber of your being? What if it was written into law and you were forced to betray your conviction?

For many Catholics and others, it is a reality happening this very moment.

It’s a sad day when the resounding cry among Americans is “How dare he?!”

President Obama violated Americans’ fundamental right to religious freedom when he signed into law a mandate forcing religious organizations (using their donor/member dues) to pay for health insurance that covers sterilization, controversial abortifacients, and contraceptives.

See: WH willing to deal on contraception ! ~ Catholics battle over ‘religious liberty’ in HC Law

As the president and CEO of a faith-based public policy group, I believe that President Obama has made a mockery of our country’s religious freedoms. And although my religious-based organization does not take a definitive stance on contraception, in this case, we are all Catholics now!

The Obama administration’s unmerciful mandate tears at religious freedom, the very root of American freedom and democracy.

In her recent USA Today editorial, Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), made a pitiful attempt to defend HHS’ mandate by asserting the Obama administration succeeded at balancing religious freedom and providing women with “critical” birth control.

* There are 1.5 million Catholic U.S. military families, and officials no doubt expected a staunch backlash.

Concerned Women for America and others will not tolerate this unprecedented trampling of our First Amendment rights!

We will fight it in the Halls of Congress.

We will fight it in the courts.

We will fight it in the pulpits and, if necessary, we will fight it in peaceful demonstrations on the streets of America.

Our Founding Fathers died for this right.

Mr. President, how dare you?!

Dutch drives right by to show you firsthand what it looks like several days later. several signs say DO NOT STOP — high security around the facility — but the shots are still great !

The facility is still steaming from near the reactor buildings — as well as from the normal stacks.

Clearly — NO ONE is around — no workers — no vehicles coming in or out of the facility.

Be safe if you live in the area — and I would like to point out the amount of CROPS directly surrounding the nuclear facility — just like at the Omaha Nebraska Nuclear Plant — Crops of corn all around the plant as far as the eye can see. To me, this is a disturbing trend — food being grown in the shadow of these large facilities.
