Authorities in northern Illinois are dealing with a diesel fuel spill on the Fox River.

Officials in Aurora say almost 1,500 gallons of fuel leaked from a Federal Aviation Administration facility on Wednesday. The FAA says the fuel flowed into a city storm sewer, which discharges into the nearby Fox River.

The fuel caused a 1.5 mile “sheen” on the river. But city officials say there’s no danger to Aurora’s public water supply.

Clean-up crews from Aurora, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and a private firm were called in to address the problem.

UPDATE: Initially, officials didn’t think the leak was a problem, but they realized several hours later that a major response was needed.

~ Since yesterday my internet connection has been very snarky, fading in & out…

The storm began heading to Earth on December 25, and the disruptions were expected to start taking place on Wednesday, December 28.

“There is a 20-40% chance of geomagnetic storms! If you live at a high latitude, look out for #auroras today,” NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory team wrote in its Twitter on Wednesday.

Scientists have warned of a major solar storm hitting the Earth that could possibly knock out radio signals.

Experts expect radio blackouts for a few days after the radiation from the coronal mass ejection (CME) hits our planet.

The flare is part of a larger increase in activity in the Sun, which is expected to peak around 2013.

“Category G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storms are expected 28 and 29 December due to multiple coronal mass ejection arrivals,” the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center reportd. “R1 (Minor) radio blackouts are expected until 31 December.”

A CME contains billions of gases bursting with X-rays and ultraviolet radiation that are flung into space at around 5 million miles per hour.

A 26-year-old woman is accused of punching a Walmart cashier in the face on Christmas Eve after she was asked to show a purchase receipt to the 70-year-old clerk.

The incident took place at a Walmart store in Western New York, where a woman and her boyfriend had just purchased some electronics on Saturday night. The woman became outraged after the clerk asked her to show her receipt – a routine act – and according to other shoppers, began screaming at the top of her lungs. It was then that she punched the 70-year-old in the face, sending her flying across the floor before fleeing into the parking lot with her boyfriend.

She suffered fractures on the left side of her face. The injured woman was taken to UMMC with a swollen face and multiple facial fractures.

Although the two ran, they were quickly surrounded by dozens of customers who followed them to their car, surrounding it so the pair couldn’t leave the scene.

This is just the latest in a slew of aggression seen throughout the country this holiday season. One such brawl took place at the Mall of America in Minnesota, with both food and chairs flying after a rumor began circulating Drake and Lil’ Wayne were about to make an appearance at the shopping center.

ATLANTA (KABC) — A young boy has made it his mission to honor soldiers traveling through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

“I tell them ‘Thank you for protecting us,’” said Cody Jackson, 8.

Jackson stops to greet and salute every service member he sees. He even wears his own child-sized military fatigues/

“And he will come up to when he sees soldiers and greet them, he will give you a piece of candy and say ‘Thank you for your service’ and salute you,” said Staff Sgt. Janeen Butler. “I’m like, ‘Aww, he is so cute.’”

“They are risking their lives, they are fighting for us our freedom and our country,” said Jackson.

His mom says this was all his own idea.

He plans to join the service himself one day.
