~ I must tell you Twitter is trending hot with disgust @ John…

Speaker agrees to Dems’ call for two-month payroll tax cut extension, gets mixed reaction from GOP rank-and-file, with some bristling at the deal and saying they were ‘hung out by leadership.’

Following a day of political grandstanding by members of both parties, as well as private talks in pursuit of an agreement, Boehner said at a news conference late Thursday that the House plans to vote on a new version of the Senate-passed bill — which would extend the payroll tax cut for another two months — despite earlier opposing a short-term extension.

The deal is a turnaround for Boehner, who until Thursday was abiding by rank-and-file wishes to reject the Senate’s two-month package and instead demand the Senate work out a yearlong package before Jan. 1.

Boehner conceded Thursday that this position “may not have been politically the smartest thing in the world.”

~ Look at the category this is in :)

However, early reaction from rank-and-file Republicans reflected dissension in the ranks once again. One Republican member told Fox News, “I’m thinking of objecting myself. We were hung out by leadership.”

Another member who was on a brief Republican conference call Thursday predicted the deal Boehner struck could cause problems for the speaker. “He may have a hard time keeping his speakership after this,” the lawmaker said.

Still another lawmaker said Republican members “never would have gone along” with the deal.

Sources tell Fox News that the plan is for the House to originate a new payroll tax bill as early as Friday.

~ Accuracy matters! Any responsible journalist or blogger would back up what they write/post. I sit on many headline breaking stories that I never post because they cannot be backed up. My drafts are many. Too bad the NYT and many yellow journalists today do not get this. Which begs the question: “Why on earth are THEY not sued?!” ~ JP

Defamation case highlights blurring of lines between journalists and bloggers:

‘Bloggers Beware’

That was the headline on a conservative blog following a $2.5 million judgment this month against blogger Crystal Cox in a defamation case tried in federal court in Oregon. It’s a case followed closely in both the blogosphere and in the traditional media, as it highlights the proliferation of blogging, the blurring of lines between journalists and bloggers and more libel cases born out of blog posts.

“There are a lot of malicious people out there,” says Bruce Johnson, a Seattle attorney with Davis Wright Tremaine and author of Washington state’s current Shield Law. “You’re not going to be able to get rid of them all. They will continue to basically write graffiti on the bathroom wall, and in this case, the Internet provides the bathroom wall,” says Johnson.

According to the Media Law Resource Center, bloggers have been hit with $47 million in defamation judgments. Just two years ago the total stood at $17 million, revealing a sharp increase. MLRC’s Dave Heller sees a rise in ‘fringe publishers’ and says the case against Cox was, in some ways, “extremely rare.”

Crystal Cox calls herself an investigative blogger who is also a journalist. The Montana real estate agent wrote extensively about the bankruptcy case of Summit Accommodations. Kevin Padrick, an Oregon attorney with Obsidian Finance Group, was appointed trustee in charge of paying Summit creditors. Cox accused Padrick of, among other things, committing tax fraud.

Padrick sued and won a unanimous jury verdict.

HOOKSETT, N.H. — On Tuesday, the u local community shared photos of an unusual cloud formation in the sky.

U local users from Hooksett, Antrim and Hampton all spotted a similar cloud.

So what was it?

~ Is that not AWESOME?!

Meteorologist Kevin Skarupa says it is a “hole punch cloud,” which are generally caused by planes going through the clouds.

Here is a description from the NOAA:

“Also known as a fallstreak hole, this type of cloud is usually formed when the water temperature in the cloud is below freezing but the water has not frozen. When sections of the water starts to freeze, the surrounding water vapor will also freeze and begin to descend. This leaves a rounded hole in the cloud. “The theory on its creation is that a disruption of the cloud layer stability, which can be caused by a passing jet aircraft, creates a descending motion that can lead to the stimulation of evaporation, producing a hole.”

“Frankly, given where the parties are, there’s not a big difference between our positions,” House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said a press event this morning. “It all comes down to the paid for, it’s the budgetary impact of the extension of this tax holiday.”

“I saw the president out yesterday doing his Christmas shopping. I saw he brought his dog with him. You know, we’re here. He could bring his dog up here. We are pet friendly. You know, again, it will not take a long time,” Cantor said. “We could probably resolve the differences within an hour.”

House Republican leaders spoke to reporters about extending the Social Security payroll tax cuts and unemployment benefits:

Northeastern University isn’t commenting about concerns regarding its Muslim chaplain, despite his recorded statements praising an attempted attack on American forces in Afghanistan as “brave” and his earlier call for Muslims to “grab on to the gun and the sword” to fight injustice.

On Monday, the Investigative Project on Terrorism reported on remarks Abdullah Faaruuq made during a Dec. 8 fundraiser for Aafia Siddiqui, also known as “Lady al-Qaida.” Siddiqui, an MIT-educated neuroscientist, was arrested by Afghan officials in 2008, who found notes about mass casualty attacks in her possession. During questioning by U.S. officials, she grabbed an Army officer’s M-4 rifle and fired it at the Americans.

“What a brave woman she is,” Faaruuq said at the fundraiser. “What a brave woman she continues to be, and how much her bravery and her faith and her belief warrants our support at this time.” Had his mother been in Siddiqui’s shoes, “she would have took (sic) her West Indian machete and cut her way through those kafirs [unbelievers].”

Siddiqui was convicted of attempted murder and is serving an 86-year prison sentence.

BEIRUT – As government troops advanced on a village in northwestern Syria, activists say the terrified residents fled into a valley for fear of being arrested or worse. What happened next, one of the activists said, was “an organized massacre.”

The troops surrounded the valley and unleashed a barrage of rockets, tank shells, bombs and gunfire in an hours-long assault, according to two human rights groups and a witness, killing more than 100 people and leaving no survivors in one of the bloodiest days of a crackdown by President Bashar Assad against a nine-month popular uprising.

The White House said it was “deeply disturbed” by Tuesday’s attack, France called it a “murderous spiral,” and the Arab League reminded the Assad regime of its responsibilities to protect its civilians.

The United Nations says more than 5,000 people have died since March as Syria has sought to put down the uprising — part of the Arab Spring of protests that has toppled long-serving unpopular leaders in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

Members of Syria’s opposition said the bloodshed outside the village of Kfar Owaid, about 30 miles from the northern border with Turkey in Idlib province, was evidence of the authoritarian leader’s intent to intensify its crackdown on the uprising before Arab League observers arrive in the country Thursday. The death toll from two days of violence this week topped 200, including up to 70 army defectors killed near the city of Idlib, the activists said.

“It was an organized massacre,” said Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based activist group. “The troops surrounded people, then killed them.”

h/t to my invaluable Char

Hacktivists are continuing their mission to take on politicians causing the collapse of constitutional rights in America, with operatives from the online collective Anonymous keeping up a campaign against the signers of controversial legislation.

As RT reported on Thursday, members of Anonymous began a campaign this week to expose information on the lawmakers who voted in favor of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012, a bill that will allow for the indefinite detention of American citizens, the reinstating of torture methods and the creation of the United States as a battlefield. Despite the implications of the act, the Senate allowed for the bill to leave Capitol Hill on Thursday, leaving only the inking of President Barack Obama’s name as the final step for ratification.

~ At this point I have to tell you, you know I like to provide videos with a report. In searching for the RT video, I found something better…~ JP

Anonymous – Message to the American People…

In a stunning move that has civil libertarians stuttering with disbelief, the U.S. Senate has just passed a bill that effectively ends the Bill of Rights in America.

The National Defense Authorization Act is being called the most traitorous act ever witnessed in the Senate, and the language of the bill is cleverly designed to make you think it doesn’t apply to Americans, but toward the end of the bill, it essentially says it can apply to Americans “if we want it to.

Dear brothers and sisters. Now is the time to open your eyes!

Together we stand against the injustice of our own Government.

We are anonymous.
We are Legion.
United as ONE.
Divided by zero.
We do not forgive Censorship.
We do not forget Oppression.
US SENATE…
Expect us!!

Music by: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – Requiem

On Friday, Anonymous says that this is just the beginning of the campaign against those that are creating the collapse of the US Constitution. With NDAA FY2012 almost guaranteed to be approved by Obama any moment, a second piece of legislation, the Stop Online Piracy Act, is close to clearing a Congressional committee. Should that bill be brought before the president and signed into law as well, Internet access and content across America and the world will become largely censored.

Dozens of Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s jail officers lined up at a news conference in Phoenix Wednesday to ceremoniously hand in their federal credentials a week after they were stripped of the ability to verify the immigration status of inmates.

Arpaio spoke at the same news conference, saying he’s going to hold the federal government to its promise to send 50 federal agents to do such screening in his jail. But he predicted there will be illegal immigrants in jail who won’t be deported and will be put back on streets.

“I want to see how many agents are going to be coming to our jail,” the sheriff said. “I want to see how long it will take for 50 agents from across the country to work in our jails.”

The Department of Homeland Security announced Dec. 15 that more than 90 of Arpaio’s Maricopa County jail officers could no longer check whether inmates were in the county illegally.

The decision followed the release of a scathing Department of Justice report that said Arpaio’s office has a pattern of racially profiling Latinos, basing immigration enforcement on racially charged citizen complaints and punishing Hispanic jail inmates for speaking Spanish.

The sheriff has denied the allegations. Homeland Security officials had no immediate comment on Arpaio’s comments on Wednesday.

On Monday, the agency said in a letter to U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl that it would send immigration agents to screen jail inmates in Arizona’s most populous county. Arpaio’s aides say only one Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer has worked at the county jails since last week.

Homeland Security’s decision wasn’t the first time Arpaio’s federal immigration powers were cut.

In October 2009, Immigration and Customs Enforcement stripped Arpaio of his power to let 100 deputies make federal immigration arrests, but still allowed his jail officers to determine the immigration status of people in jail.

SPRINGFIELD, MO.

Walmart is pulling powdered infant formula from all its stores nationwide after a 10-day old Missouri boy died.

Health officials in Missouri say Avery Cornett died from a rare bacteria that can grow in powdered baby formula.

Scientists with the CDC and the FDA are investigating whether the bacteria was present in the Enfamil newborn formula the boy drank.

A spokesperson for Mead Johnson, the maker of the formula, says the batch Walmart pulled tested negative for the bacterium so it’s not issuing a recall.

But the company is working with government investigators to research the batch in question.

Walmart has pulled that specific Enfamil product off its shelves and recalling cans that have already been sold.

The newborn powder formula comes in 12.5 ounce canisters with the lot number ZP1K7G on the bottom of the can.

Enfamil has this number — 1-800-baby-123 — that is also available for parents with questions about baby formula products.

Issued by The National Weather Service
Birmingham, AL
Updated Dec 22, 2011, 9:00am CST

… FLASH FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM CST THIS EVENING…

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BIRMINGHAM HAS ISSUED A

* FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF NORTHWEST CENTRAL ALABAMA… INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING AREAS… WALKER… MARION… WINSTON… FAYETTE… LAMAR AND PICKENS.

* UNTIL 6 PM CST THIS EVENING.

* HEAVY RAINS TO THE WEST WILL SLIDE INTO THE AREA AND CONTINUE OVER PORTIONS OF CENTRAL ALABAMA OVER A PROLONGED PERIOD. RAINFALL OF 1 TO 2 INCHES IS POSSIBLE ACROSS THE NORTHWEST WITH LOCALIZED AREAS RECEIVING HIGHER TOTALS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS MAY DEVELOP THAT LEAD TO FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION.

YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION SHOULD FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS BE ISSUED.

TORNADO WATCH TO THE WEST: SPC continues a tornado watch for much of Central and South Mississippi, and Southeast Louisiana until 1:00 this afternoon, and they have much of Alabama in the standard “slight risk” for severe weather later today.

ON THE MAPS: A surface front bisects Alabama this morning, with nearly a 20 degree swing on either side of the boundary. We see upper 40s to the north for places like Cullman, and upper 60s near Montgomery. The front should move very slowly north today, and it will mark the northern edge of the severe weather threat. No doubt the severe weather threat will be mainly south of U.S. 278 today… the Tennessee Valley will remain cool and stable.

TIMING: We note a strong storm moving into Marion and Franklin Counties of Northwest Alabama early this morning as I write this, but that is elevated with no surface based instability. The primary severe weather risk for Alabama will come from about 10:00 this morning until 6:00 this evening.

PLACEMENT: The best combination of instability and shear will be near U.S. 80… Demopolis to Montgomery to Opelika… but severe storms are certainly possible as far north as I-20… Tuscaloosa to Birmingham to Anniston. North of Birmingham the severe weather threat is smaller with little instability there.

THREATS: The stronger storms today will could produce hail and strong winds, and forecast low level helicity values and LCL heights certainly bring up the risk of a few isolated tornadoes as well. This is not a “major threat”, but a few tornado warnings are possible later today. We will also have to watch for bowing storm segments on radar today and potential for damaging winds; maybe even a derecho type situation. Rain amounts around one inch are likely.

~ I will add warnings to comments when needed & post the afternoon extreme video. ~ JP
