Hundreds of Occupy Wall Street protesters — emboldened by officials backing down this morning from evicting them from their Zuccotti Park campsite for a 7 a.m. cleaning — stormed Wall Street, leaping over barriers and getting into a fracas with cops.

The throng of protesters streamed onto Broadway, blocking traffic, setting up a confrontation with police who are waiting for them on the street.

Things turned predictably violent as cops tackled protesters and chased them up the street — forcing everyone to the sidewalks — in what turned into a melee.

“Late last night, we received notice from the owners of Zuccotti Park – Brookfield Properties – that they are postponing their scheduled cleaning of the park, and for the time being withdrawing their request from earlier in the week for police assistance during their cleaning operation. Our position has been consistent throughout: the City’s role is to protect public health and safety, to enforce the law, and guarantee the rights of all New Yorkers. Brookfield believes they can work out an arrangement with the protesters that will ensure the park remains clean, safe, available for public use and that the situation is respectful of residents and businesses downtown, and we will continue to monitor the situation,” Deputy Mayor Cas Holloway said in a statement.

~ Supporters streamed into the plaza early Friday before the announcement about the postponement. There was a strong police presence, and a showdown between protesters and authorities had been feared.

~ Some protesters said they would resist; others planned to cooperate but engage in nonviolent civil disobedience if they were not allowed back in the park.

New York City police plan to evict the “Occupy Wall Street” protesters — if only temporarily. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited Zucotti Park in lower Manhattan on Wednesday evening and made the cleaning announcement, citing sanitation concerns from the park’s owner, MyFoxNY.com reports.

The company told police that it had received “hundreds of phone calls and emails” from locals complaining about “lewdness, groping, drinking and drug use, the lack of safe access to and usage of the Park, ongoing noise at all hours, unsanitary conditions and offensive odors,” NBC New York reports.

The protesters, who have camped out in a city park for more than three weeks, will be forced out Friday so that city crews can help clean the area.

Brookfield Properties, the owner of the park, had outlined its concerns in a letter to the city’s police commissioner, Ray Kelly.

Brookfield also raised concerns about shipments of “materials” to the park, which they say are unscreened.

In the battle of Capitalism vs. Socialism, score one for making a profit.

The Occupy Wall Street (and Everything else) protest has loudly proclaimed its goal of taking down Wall Street. As they explained their anti-corporate creed in the “Declaration of Occupation”:

“We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments.”

But capitalism and free markets have a way of winning on their own. And Occupy Wall Street is no exception.

As of Tuesday, there were 1,200 “Occupy Wall Street” products available on eBay – for purchase.
