Project 21 fellow Deneen Borelli responds to an accusation made by entertainer Morgan Freeman that tea party opposition to President Obama is “racist.” Deneen, a frequent tea party speaker, says tea party opposition to Obama is due to the President’s policies and not his skin color. Furthermore, for Freeman to make an explosive accusation of this nature is “utterly outrageous,” and it is “dangerous” for the President and his supporters to seek to exacerbate racial tensions as a means to “whip up the base” and regain political momentum for the Obama agenda.

This interview with Martha MacCallum was broadcast during the 9/26/11 edition of “America’s Newsroom” on the Fox News Channel. The Project 21 black leadership network is a program of The National Center for Public Policy Research.

Herman Cain is hitting back at Morgan Freeman for calling the Tea Party racist.

The Republican presidential candidate called the Oscar-winning actor’s eyebrow-raising remarks “short-sighted” on Friday. “Most of the people that are criticizing the Tea Partiers about having a racist element, they have never been to a Tea Party,” Cain told Fox News.

Cain: My Message Is Resonating With Voters

Freeman, who endorsed Obama in 2007, created a firestorm when he told CNN’s Piers Morgan (See video below} earlier this week that conservative opposition to the President has enflamed racism in America. He added the Tea Partiers have the mentality of “Screw the country, we’re going to do whatever we can to get this black man out of here…It is a racist thing.”

Despite the criticism, Cain said he wasn’t offended by Freeman’s comments. “Name calling is something that is going to continue in this because they don’t know how to stop this movement and this movement is making a big difference in politics,” said Cain, the former CEO of Godfather’s Pizza.

~ This really disappoints me. I have liked Morgan since his days on “The Electric Company” (1971). My firstborn liked this much better than Sesame Street. I think he is such a distinguished actor but his politics are so liberally screwed! This southern boy is so disappointing. ~ JP

From the D.C:

Asked whether Barack Obama’s presidency has made racism better or worse, Freeman responded by saying his 2008 election made it worse — because of Republicans.

“Their stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves one term,” he said. “What’s, what does that, what underlines that? ‘Screw the country. We’re going to whatever we do to get this black man, we can, we’re going to do whatever we can to get this black man outta here.’”

When Piers Morgan insisted that race doesn’t play a role, Freeman shot back that “it is a racist thing.”

The actor also said it unnerved him to see the tea party gaining traction because it shows the hatred that exists in the United States.

“It just shows the weak, dark, underside of America,” Freeman said. “We’re supposed to be better than that. We really are. That’s, that’s why all those people were in tears when Obama was elected president. ‘Ah, look at what we are. Look at how, this is America.’ You know? And then it just sort of started turning because these people surfaced like stirring up muddy water.”

From Newsbusters:

Morgan Freeman, in an interview to be aired on CNN Friday evening, says that President Obama has made racism worse in America.

Chatting with Piers Morgan, the Oscar-winning actor also blames the Tea Party saying they’re “going to do whatever [they] can to get this black man outta here” (video follows with transcript and commentary). See Transcript…
