:: ‘Madman’ Eyed in Norway Massacre ::
SUNDVOLLEN, Norway — The 32-year-old man suspected in bomb and shooting attacks that killed at least 91 people in Norway bought six tons of fertilizer before the massacres, the supplier said Saturday as police investigated witness accounts of a second shooter.
Norway’s prime minister and royal family visited grieving relatives of the scores of youth gunned down in a horrific killing spree on an idyllic island retreat. A man who said he was carrying a knife was detained by police officers outside the hotel, as the shell-shocked Nordic nation was gripped by reports that Norwegian gunman may not have acted alone.
Witnesses Suggest Second Shooter Involved in Norway Youth Camp Rampage
Norway’s national news agency says police are investigating whether a second suspect was involved in a shooting spree on an island where 84 people were killed.
Police have arrested one man on preliminary charges in the massacre and a bombing in Oslo hours earlier.
NTB is reporting Saturday that witnesses told police two people were involved in the shooting on Utoya island. The agency says police are looking into it.
The agency says that the second man apparently wasn’t disguised in police uniform. The man under arrest was wearing a sweater with a police emblem on it.
In total, 91 people were killed in the two attacks.
Knife-Carrying Man Detained Outside Meeting Between Norway PM, Shooting Victims’ Families
Police have detained a man outside a hotel where Norway’s prime minister was meeting families of shooting victims. The man told reporters he was detained “because I have a knife.”
The man, who appeared to be around 20 years old, was standing outside the hotel next to reporters when two officers apprehended him and led him to a police car.
The man told reporters he was a member of the Labor Party’s youth wing and was carrying a knife “because I feel unsafe.”
Norway Attacks: Anders Behring Breivik Reported as Suspect
The suspect arrested for twin terror attacks in Norway Friday has been identified as Anders Behring Breivik, according to media reports in the U.K. and Norway.
Police believe the 32-year-old, six-foot-plus Norwegian acted alone in the bombing of government offices in Oslo and an assault with firearms on a island youth camp less than a hour from the capital.
A man fitting Breivik’s description was reportedly seen in the area of the bombing prior to the explosion.
Norwegian television said that Breivik belongs to right-wing circles in Oslo, and a Swedish newspaper has reported the Breivik has posted on right-wing forums in Norway.
Norwegian media has linked Breivik to a Facebook account in which the poster described himself as a Christian conservative.
At least 17 people are known dead in the two attacks. Seven were killed in the central Oslo bombing, which damaged the office of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg.
On the island of Utoya, where Stoltenberg’s Labour Party runs a youth camp, at least 10 are dead. A witness reported 20 bodies on the island’s shoreline.
There were more than 500 campers on the island when a man dressed as a policeman appeared and began firing two hours after the Oslo bombing.
Teens were seen jumping into the water and swimming away from the island to escape the attack. Explosives were found on Utoya after the suspect was arrested and taken into custody.
