Muslim Brotherhood, ElBaradei in talks to form post-Mubarak govt in Egypt

Such a government would be the first step toward an Islamic state in Egypt. “Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood eyes unity gov’t without Mubarak,” from Haaretz, January 30 (thanks to Benedict):

The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt’s largest opposition group,is [sic] in talks with other anti-government figures to form a national unity government without President Hosni Mubarak, a group official told DPA on Sunday….

Gamal Nasser, a spokesman for the Brotherhood, told DPA that his group was in talks with Mohammed ElBaradei – the former UN nuclear watchdog chief – to form a national unity government without the National Democratic Party of Mubarak.

big_Gazafired Missile Hits Israel City Of Ashdod For First Time01

Update thanks to Char JUST Piper was the second to break this story (nearly five hours ago) thanks to Jim Hoft & JihadiHunter:

Palestinians shell western Negev with Grads, mortar attacks
By YAAKOV LAPPIN 02/01/2011 01:20

Barrage of fire from Gaza hits southern Israel; rocket lands near building where wedding is taking place in Netivot; 4 treated for shock, vehicle damaged; Color Red rocket alert system fails to go off.

The relative calm in the South was shattered on Monday night when Palestinians in Gaza fired a barrage of powerful Grad rockets and mortar shells at the western Negev.

One Grad-type rocket fired from Gaza smashed into the town of Ofakim and a second rocket slammed into Netivot, not far from a building where a wedding celebration was taking place.

Four people were treated for shock from the attack on Netivot and a vehicle was damaged.

Wedding guests reported hearing a deafening explosion, and say that the Color Red rocket alert system failed to go off. The IDF Home Front Command said it would look into why alert was not activated.

No injuries or damage were reported in the attack on Ofakim.

Meanwhile, the Eshkol Regional Council reported a mortar attack originating from Gaza. The shell landed in an open area.

Read the article carefully and note the similarities in italics with our country:

Tunisia’s uprising has democracy watchers wondering if the instability will spill over into neighboring North African countries, but really that instability is already there. In the first week of the year, Algeria experienced violent protests after the government hiked prices for staple foods like milk, sugar, oil, and flour. Some 800 people were injured in several days of rioting, prompting President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to cut costs on some foods and lower import duties on others. The rioters went home, but odds are they will return to the streets when prices rise again.

Those rioters are not just angry about high food prices. Unemployment in Algeria is officially at 11%, but estimates from outside of the government run much higher, along the lines of 25%. Inflation keeps creeping up, and the country’s impoverished population, who has very little freedom, has grown distrustful of the government. A massive boycott rendered the results of the last presidential election, where Bouteflika won with 92% of the vote, almost meaningless.

But Algeria is not poor – an OPEC member, it is the ninth largest crude oil producer in the world. More importantly for this conversation, Algeria is the world’s sixth largest natural gas producer, pumping out just over 3 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of natural gas in 2008. At the beginning of 2010, the country’s proven natural gas reserves stood at 159 Tcf, the tenth largest in the world, and notably, Algeria exports some 3.6 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas each day to Europe.

~ Note that oil prices went up again today!

On top of the natural gas flowing to Europe through pipes, Algeria has become a key supplier of liquefied natural gas, or LNG. In 2008, Algeria exported 711 Bcf of LNG, and 90% of it went to Europe.

Europe is growing increasingly reliant on LNG – for two reasons. First, Europe does not like relying on Russia for natural gas because that gas has to come through Ukrainian pipelines. Three times in the last five years, there have been major supply disruptions due to allegations that the Ukrainians were siphoning off gas. The most serious disruption came in January 2009, when 18 European countries reported major drops or complete gas cut-offs.

Second, Europe’s energy needs continue to rise, but many European governments have committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Since natural gas is low-carbon and clean-burning, it has become a key part of Europe’s future energy strategy.

The EU has a “four corridors” plan for its natural gas needs: it will draw from Norway, a reliable supplier; Russia, through those Ukrainian pipelines; North Africa, primarily Algeria; and Central Asia and the Middle East, through Turkey. It would be a great plan, if only it were closer to reality. The Turkish route relies on the long-planned Nabucco pipeline, which is making very slow progress towards construction. And Norway’s reserves are dwindling. Up steps Algeria in importance.

Algeria already supplies 20% of Europe’s natural gas and more than 30% of the EU’s LNG imports. And in November, European LNG import volumes set a new record high – Europe imported a staggering 302 Bcf of LNG, shattering the old record (set only in September) by 52 Bcf. The United Kingdom, facing its coldest winter in years, alone accounted for 73 Bcf. Whether the average Brit, Spaniard, or Italian realizes it, they rely on Algeria.

And along with high unemployment, high food prices, and little freedom, Algeria’s citizens are justifiably angry that their country’s resource wealth is not making things better for the average person. If Algeria’s rioters return, spurred on by their Tunisian neighbors or by their own government’s inadequacy, and overthrow Mr. Bouteflika in favor of an anti-European government, gas prices could take a serious jump. And LNG is transported by ships, not pipelines, so if Europe is not willing to pay those higher prices, the ships will simply sail to other countries that will.

This is no certain thing – no one knows if Algeria will follow in Tunisia’s footsteps, especially if the current confusion in Tunisia evolves into prolonged chaos. And Algerians know how important oil and gas revenues are for their country – even during Algeria’s bloody civil war in the 1990s, during which some 160,000 people died, oil and gas exports were not affected.

Marin Katusa, our chief energy strategist, and his team make sure to keep a close eye on the global energy markets. Thanks to this vigilance, they continuously find new, overlooked opportunities… like unconventional oil and gas exploration in the Middle East, or a little-known “green” energy that is poised to strike it rich.

But i thought ObamaCARE was so great? Is this why dingy Harry Reid is too chicken sh*t to bring the repeal ObamaCARE bill vote up in the Senate? There were already 222 (known) waivers granted for ObamaCARE in the past month. Now you can add three more. According to CNSNEWS, three local chapters of the thugish Service Employees International Union (SEIU), have received waivers for ObamaCARE. One of the three is the Local 25 SEIU chapter in none other than Chicago. SEIU thugs who not only beat up conservative black men, also spent $27 million supporting Barack Obama in the 2008.

Like Nancy Pelosi said. We had to pass the bill so we could find out what was in it. So far, since we’ve “found out” what’s in it, no one seems to like it.

HHS gave a waiver to Local 25 SEIU in Chicago with 31,000 enrollees on Oct. 1, 2010; to Local 1199 SEIU Greater New York Benefit Fund with 4,544 enrollees on Oct. 10, 2010; and to the SEIU Local 1 Cleveland Welfare Fund with 520 enrollees on Nov. 15, 2010.

From Judicial Watch:

Local chapters of a powerful national union that spent nearly $30 million to help President Obama get elected are among the fortunate few to get waivers from inconvenient provisions of the contentious healthcare law.

The information, revealed today by a conservative news site CNS, comes a week after this blog reported that a disproportionately high number of Obamacare waivers are being granted to the president’s allies in a secretive process. Political appointees at the Department of Health and Human Services have issued more than 200 exemptions—mostly to the president’s financial supporters—from some of the more burdensome provisions of the healthcare reform law.

DENVER—Jay Stuart DeVaughn, aka Jay Paige Edwards, age 42, of Aurora, Colorado, was sentenced this morning by U.S. District Judge John L. Kane to serve 72 months (6 years) in federal prison for mailing threatening communications, including threatening letters containing white powder to the President, members of Congress, and the Argentine Consulate. DeVaughn, who appeared at the hearing in custody, was remanded. Following his prison sentence, DeVaughn was ordered to serve three years on supervised release. The issue of restitution to the victims of DeVaughn’s crime will be addressed at a future hearing.

DeVaughn was first charged by criminal complaint on February 26, 2010. He was then indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver on March 9, 2010. He pled guilty before Judge Kane on August 26, 2010. He was sentenced on January 28, 2011.

The August 26, 2010 plea agreement outlines criminal conduct in three judicial Districts, Colorado, the Northern District of Alabama, and the Middle District of Alabama. According to the plea agreement, the defendant mailed threatening letters, which included a bag containing white powder, to elected officials from all three districts as well as the Argentine Consulate. With the exception of the Argentine Consulate letters, each threatening letter included the name of a Metro Denver doctor as the return address, and referenced healthcare reform as the reason the author of the letters was angry.

According to the stipulated facts in the plea agreement, as it relates to the Colorado criminal conduct, on September 10, 2009, the White House mail facility in Washington, DC intercepted a letter addressed to “President Barack Obama.” The defendant mailed the letter from Denver, Colorado. The letter stated essentially “. . . your so called health care ‘reform’ is a … joke …. Have you heard of anthrax??? Get a whiff of this….” Enclosed in the letter was a plastic bag containing white powder. On September 4, 2009, the defendant mailed a threatening letter containing white powder to Congresswoman Diana DeGette’s office in Washington, DC. On November 24, 2009, DeVaughn mailed a threatening letter containing white powder to Senator Mark Udall’s office in Denver. On November 25, 2009, DeVaughn mailed a threatening letter containing white powder to Senator Michael Bennett’s office in Denver. On that same date he sent Congressman Mike Coffman a threatening letter containing white powder to the Congressman’s Lone Tree, Colorado office. On January 4, 2010, DeVaughn mailed a threatening letter with white powder to the Argentine Consulate in Los Angeles, California. On January 10, 2010, a white powder letter was mailed to the Argentine Consulate in New York.

FBI agents were able to match the handwriting on the threatening white powder letters to the handwriting of the defendant. The Secret Service was able to match the defendant’s handwriting to that of the threat letter sent to the President. Agents also matched fingerprints from some of the white powder letters to DeVaughn.

Regarding the criminal conduct involving the Northern District of Alabama, on January 3, 2010, DeVaughn mailed a threatening letter containing white powder to Congressman Richard Shelby’s office in Birmingham, Alabama. On January 5, 2010, the defendant mailed a letter containing white powder to Senator Jeff Session’s office, also in Birmingham, Alabama. On January 4, 2010, DeVaughn mailed a threatening letter with white powder to Congressman Mike Rogers’ office in Anniston, Alabama.

The defendant’s criminal conduct involving the Middle District of Alabama included a January 3, 2010 threatening letter with white powder mailed to Congressman Richard Shelby’s Montgomery, Alabama office, a January 4, 2010 threatening letter with white powder mailed to Senator Jeff Sessions’ Montgomery, Alabama office, and the January 4, 2010 mailing of a threatening letter containing white powder to Congressman Mike Rogers’ Montgomery, Alabama office.

Persons receiving the letter reasonably believed that they had been subjected to the use of a biological weapon, specifically anthrax. Upon receiving the letters, emergency personnel were called and responded. Further evaluation of the white powder substance revealed that it was not harmful.

In DeVaughn’s Colorado case, he pled guilty to one count of mailing a threat against the President, four counts of mailing threatening communications, and two counts of threatening communications via interstate commerce. He also pled guilty to three counts of conveying false information and hoaxes to elected officials in the Northern District of Alabama, and three counts of conveying false information and hoaxes to elected officials in the Middle District of Alabama.

“Today’s sentence sends a clear, strong message to anyone who might make threats of violence or use hoax weapons: Your criminal behavior will be investigated and prosecuted, and you will serve a lengthy prison sentence,” said U.S. Attorney John Walsh.

“The Secret Service takes seriously each threat against any of our protectees. This case typifies the success of cooperative efforts amongst federal agencies here in Denver and nationally,” said Special Agent in Charge Daniel Donahue, U.S. Secret Service Denver Field Office.

“Our public officials who stand to serve our community as well as the private citizens who make this community great deserve to live their lives free of fear and intimidation,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge in Denver James Davis. “The FBI’s determination to pursue justice and our dedication to work in full cooperation with local, state, and federal partners are reflected in this sentencing.”

“Use of the mails for threatening purposes can violate the public trust in the Postal Service and can endanger the public,” said U.S. Postal Inspector in Charge in Denver Thomas Noyes. “It is a top priority of the United States Postal Inspection Service to prevent and apprehend criminals such as this one for criminal misuse of the mail. Agents of varying agencies worked together to bring this case to assure the perpetrator was brought to justice. Denver Postal Inspectors are pleased with the outcome of this investigation and the efforts of the United States Attorney’s Office in bringing this prosecution to a successful conclusion.”

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), and the United States Secret Service (USSS).

DeVaughn is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Holloway.
