While scolding the people of state of Arizona for their new immigration enforcement law, President Barack Obama and his Homeland Security Secretary repeatedly demonstrate their lack of enthusiasm for protecting the U.S. borders and cracking down on illegal (criminal) immigrants, say border security advocates.

Last week, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano released the FY 2010 immigration deportation numbers claiming that “it’s been another record-breaking year of record criminal alien removals.” Yet, Secretary Napolitano neglected to mention that while deportation of criminal aliens has risen, the total removals are roughly the same, and the number of non-criminal aliens removed has dropped substantially.

Meanwhile, a growing number of Americans say their political leaders are trying to scam citizens with phony reform legislation which will actually reward lawbreakers and increase the number of illegals who will flood our borders to partake of the giveaways. For instance, part of one Senate bill will allow illegals to pay instate (lower) college tuition, while citizens will have to pay higher tuition if they live out-of-state.

Responding to the Napolitano’s new report, Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform stated, “It is nice to hear that Secretary Janet Napolitano believes that the removal of people in the country illegally – especially those who have committed violent crimes – is an important function for DHS. However, policy directives from the highest levels of DHS clearly demonstrate that the administration is refusing to enforce laws against noncriminal aliens.”

Removing violent and criminal aliens from American society must obviously be DHS’s highest immigration enforcement priority. However, while DHS has acted to remove criminal aliens already in custody, they have adopted policies to assure all non-criminal aliens in the country face no threat of removal.

“Secretary Napolitano is giving herself and DHS a big pat on the back for stepping up enforcement without mentioning that the department is merely completing cases initiated under the previous administration, under policies that she and President Obama have aggressively dismantled since taking office,” observed Stein. Some 58,000 fewer noncriminal aliens were deported in FY 2010 over the previous year.

The Obama Administration recently appointed a police chief — who believes in illegal alien sanctuary city policies — to command an immigration enforcement program that entails federal agents working with local police departments on cases involving illegal aliens.

As part of the Homeland Security Department’s anti-terrorism mission, the new director for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Office of State and Local Coordination is now Harold Hurtt, an outspoken critic of immigration enforcement on the local level such as Arizona’s new immigration enforcement law.

DHS data show that the current administration has dramatically curtailed all aspects of immigration enforcement against illegal aliens who have not committed violent crimes in this country. In the critical area of worksite enforcement, administrative arrests have fallen by 77 percent, criminal arrests are down 60 percent, indictments are down 64 percent, and convictions have fallen by 68 percent since 2008.

“Once the pipeline opened under the Bush administration has been emptied, removal of illegal aliens who are not violent criminals will be reduced to a trickle,” Stein said. “Resources appropriated by Congress intended to carry out worksite and other enforcement in the interior of the country are being used for meaningless paperwork audits, rather than serious enforcement against employers and the removal of illegal aliens from jobs that are desperately needed by American workers.

“It appears that the release of the FY 2010 data, and Secretary Napolitano’s media tour, have more to do with addressing what the administration perceives as a political weakness heading into the midterm elections, than a sincere effort to deter and combat illegal immigration,” said Stein. “The goal is to convince the American people that immigration enforcement is being dealt with so that the administration can move on to its real policy objective: massive amnesty for every illegal alien who is not a violent felon.

“Getting criminal aliens out of the country is important. But the American people also believe that it is important to enforce laws against other illegal aliens who are filling millions of needed jobs and consuming billions in public resources. The administration is defiantly neglecting those responsibilities, while misleading the public by taking credit for the results of policies they are now dismantling,” Stein concluded.

This Monday Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Kit Bond (R-MO) talked with Center for Security Policy president Frank Gaffney on Secure Freedom Radio about the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START). Gaffney asked Bond about a recent assessment he completed for the committee. Bond responded:

Listen to the entire interview, here

Heritage’s New START research

Obviously, the classified details are available to my colleagues in the secure reading room. I can certainly share with you my conclusions. I think that pushing this new START treaty the administration is taking us down a dangerous path. I think the treaty is weak on verification especially compared to previous treaties like START and the INF treaty. We will have much greater trouble determining if Russia is cheating and given Russia’s track record, that’s a real problem.

It is easy to forget about the communist threat, considering that we are faced with what appears, at first glance, to be a separate and different enemy—the global Islamic jihad.

In his powerful new book, Paul Kengor notes that “The Communists could not succeed without the dupes.” His book is titled, Dupes: How America’s Adversaries Have Manipulated Progressives for a Century. But the key question, never completely answered in his book, is whether Barack Obama is a dupe—or something else.

Kengor, a professor at Grove City College and the executive director of its Center for Vision and Values, is the author of the best-selling book, The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism. He understands the communist problem that Reagan fought in Hollywood and in his own foreign policy as President of the United States.

Although the cover of Dupes features a photo of then-Soviet dictator Leonid Brezhnev planting a kiss on the cheek of then-President Carter, it is the current U.S. president, Barack Hussein Obama, who generates the most controversy, based on a careful analysis of his associates and Communist Party USA mentor, Frank Marshall Davis. Those who read Kengor’s book will wonder why they were not given this information during the 2008 presidential campaign.

Examining Obama’s run for president, Kengor says, in regard to the group, “Progressives for Obama,” that it reads “like a Who’s Who of the ‘60s radicals called to testify before the House Committee on Internal Security.” That committee, Kengor notes, was the new version of the House Committee on Un-American Activities, started by Democrats with Republican support. That was a time when there was bipartisan agreement that communism was a threat to the American way of life. The committee was abolished by Congressional liberals.

With the hiring of communist Van Jones by the White House, and his return to the Soros-funded Center for American Progress after his firing, it is clear that anti-communism is no longer a sentiment shared by the modern-day progressive movement. Jones was fired by the White House not for his communist beliefs but because questions about how he was hired—and by whom—were beginning to reach Obama and his advisor, Valerie Jarrett. That is when the media let the matter drop. It was getting too close for comfort to the White House.

Revolutionary Islam

It is easy to forget about the communist threat, considering that we are faced with what appears, at first glance, to be a separate and different enemy—the global Islamic jihad. But it is significant that terrorist Carlos the Jackal, raised by a Marxist father, has converted to Islam in prison in France and now embraces “revolutionary Islam.” Marxist lawyer Lynne Stewart got 10 years in prison for providing illegal support to her client, Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, responsible for the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and praised Islamic fundamentalists as “basically forces of national liberation.”

Hence, it is no surprise that the recent FBI raids on Marxist groups in various U.S. cities were designed not only to find evidence of material support for foreign terrorist groups like the Communist FARC in Colombia, but the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and Hezbollah in the Middle East. The FARC operates with the support of the Hugo Chavez regime in Venezuela, which in turn acts on behalf of Iranian interests in Latin America. Marxism and radical Islam have found a common enemy—the United States and its allies, especially Israel.

If anything should come out of Kengor’s well-documented new book, Dupes, it should be a determination by the new Congress to re-establish the House Committee on Internal Security, so that all of the facts about radical subversion and communist networks in America should be exposed to public view. His book makes extensive use of the investigations from that and other congressional committees, as well as FBI files on prominent personalities. What is needed is up-to-date information from witnesses provided under oath.

In addition to Obama, Kengor exposes such figures as Ted Kennedy and Walter Cronkite.

“The Marxist radicals of the 1960s had fought to ‘disrupt’ and ‘incapacitate’ the American ‘empire,’” Kengor notes. While they won in Vietnam, costing the lives of 58,000 Americans, it appeared that President Reagan’s anti-communist foreign policy in the 1980s, conducted in Europe and Latin America, had turned the tide against them. But years later, he writes, these Marxist radicals would find “inspiration and direction in the presidential candidacy of Barack Obama” and “suddenly had new life.”

Kengor then says this: “Whether Obama knew it or not, he was the man on whom they projected their ideals and vision for America and the world—a vision that had long ago been exposed as false utopianism.” The phrase, “whether Obama knew it or not,” is worthy of discussion.

PART II In order to collect the money, Marxists like Fidel Castro have long argued for a global tax. Obama endorsed consideration of that approach at the recent U.N. meeting.

In a Washington Post op-ed based on his new book, The Roots of Obama’s Rage, Dinesh D’Souza argues against the notion that Obama is a socialist. “Some have described the president as being a conventional liberal or even a socialist,” he writes in the Post. “But liberals and socialists are typically focused on poverty and social equality; Obama rarely addresses these issues, and when he does so, it is without passion.”

But D’Souza, president of The King’s College, a Christian institution, acknowledges that Obama’s signature legislation, introduced when he was a senator, was the Global Poverty Act, which argued for the transfer of hundreds of billions of dollars from the U.S. to the rest of the world through the United Nations. He cites my research on this controversial piece of legislation in a footnote.

In order to collect the money, Marxists like Fidel Castro have long argued for a global tax. Obama endorsed consideration of that approach at the recent U.N. meeting.

Yet D’Souza contends that the Global Poverty Act reflects the “anti-colonial paradigm” and not a Marxist view about transferring the wealth. He contends that “Anti-colonialism is the idea that the rich countries got rich by looting the poor countries…”

What D’Souza fails to grasp is that “anti-colonialism” was a tactic of the communists, in order to discredit the United States and other Western powers. Obama’s mentor, Frank Marshall Davis, was a member of the Communist Party USA.

Davis Speaks

In the last known recorded interview with Davis, available at Washington University in St. Louis, he openly discusses his relationships with Paul Robeson and Harry Bridges, without of course disclosing their communist affiliations. He says he knew Bridges and Robeson and that Robeson urged him to go to Hawaii. In the interview Davis also ridicules one of the congressional committees that tried to get him under oath to discuss his involvement in the CPUSA. It had treated him as a “hostile” witness.

Since Davis is dead and Obama won’t speak the truth about him, Paul Kengor’s book Dupes notes that one of the important issues is “defining” the Davis influence over Obama. It is clear, from Obama’s own book, that Davis functioned as a mentor in some regard. “I was intrigued by old Frank,” Obama wrote, “with his books and whiskey breath and hint of hard-earned knowledge behind the hooded eyes.” He said Davis gave him advice on life and college.

Avoiding Scrutiny

All of this should have been reviewed by the FBI. But the loophole in our system is that a candidate for elected federal office, such as the presidency, can avoid a background check by law enforcement authorities. On the other hand, employees who work for the president are supposed to undergo background checks.

Former FBI agent Max Noel has said that the Bureau used to conduct background investigations by analyzing the factors enveloped under the acronym CARL—for Character, Associates, Reputation, and Loyalties.

How would Obama have fared under such scrutiny? On the matter of associates alone, the relationship with Frank Marshall Davis would have been a major red flag. Obama’s dealings with former communist terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn would also have surfaced in such an inquiry.

Whitewashing a Communist

However, D’Sousa goes astray here as well, contending that Obama viewed himself and Ayers as “anti-colonial warriors.” He asserts that Ayers opposed the Vietnam War because he viewed North Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh as an anti-colonialist, not a communist. “For Ho and Bill,” D’Souza writes, “this was an anti-colonial struggle.” In fact, Ayers and Dohrn wrote a book dedicated in part to the assassin of anti-war candidate Robert F. Kennedy, demonstrating that their interest in Vietnam was not a withdrawal of U.S. forces and the termination of colonial influences but bringing the country—and the region—into the communist camp.

Ayers and Dohrn were not “anti-colonialists” but hard-core Communists who would come into Obama’s life in Chicago, after Obama had already been under the influence of Davis for eight years.

“Sure, there are radical elements associated with him [Obama],” D’Souza says, “but quite possibly they are his pawns.” This statement turns Obama’s life story on its head, implying that the communists involved in his life from his very early years are somehow his “dupes,” of a person they influenced or manipulated.

It bears repeating: a young Obama didn’t use Davis; Davis used him. That is why Obama covered up the relationship, referring to Davis as just “Frank” in his memoir, Dreams from My Father. The rest is history that continues to unfold before our eyes. It is not the story of someone being influenced by anti-colonialism but by a hard-core member of the CPUSA.

The advantage of accusing Obama of being an anti-colonialist, rather than Marxist, is that it enables D’Souza to avoid the sensitive question of whether Obama is loyal to the United States or subservient to a foreign and alien ideology that envisions the transformation of the U.S. into what the CPUSA openly called “Soviet America.” D’Souza writes defensively, “I am not suggesting that Obama is anti-American.”

But his defensive stance hasn’t spared him any criticism from pro-Obama advocates. It is as if Obama’s defenders want to attack this book so that the more substantial and accurate allegations, found in Kengor’s well-documented book, can be dismissed in advance.

The Kengor book provides the documentary evidence that the Obama Administration and the progressives cannot refute and which lays the groundwork for further investigation into the communist networks in Hawaii and Chicago that cultivated Obama and sponsored his political career. Trevor Loudon, who broke the Frank Marshall Davis story, is continuing to do some of this work through his KeyWiki website.

Kengor’s recent article on official CPUSA involvement in the October 2 “One Nation Working Together” rally functions as a postscript, alerting us to the ominous nature of the progressive-communist alliance that openly supports the Obama presidency. It is shocking that a political party that received Soviet funding and direction, and which committed espionage on behalf of the old Soviet Union, should be elevated to such status in an event that received the backing of Obama’s political organization and the giant labor federation, the AFL-CIO.

We covered the event, filming and documenting the involvement of the CPUSA and numerous other communist and socialist groups.

Is the FBI Watching?

Davis had been on the FBI’s “security index,” meaning that he was such a potentially dangerous individual that he could have been detained in the event of a national emergency. FBI agents who had monitored his activities suspected him of possible espionage, based on his extensive photographing of the Hawaiian coast. Hawaii was and is a strategic asset to the U.S.

Davis also used his camera for other purposes, as the archives at Washington University attest. Several of his photographs are of nude women. Davis had written a pornographic novel that described sexual practices, including pedophilia. That the novel was based, at least in part, on Davis’s own experiences, is also troubling.

Now, Davis’s student, Barack Obama, described by Kengor as Davis’s “star pupil,” occupies the oval office, where he is in charge of the national security apparatus and in possession of highly sensitive and classified intelligence information which, in the wrong hands, could threaten the survival of the United States.

But if former agents of the FBI recognize the danger, one must assume or hope that current officials in the bureau see it as well. It remains to be seen what they will do about it.
