TIMELINE:

In 2001, the World Trade Center complex was the jewel in the Lower Manhattan skyline. The Twin Towers boasted 110 stories and rose 1,350 feet. But by 10:28 am on September 11, everything changed. Follow Rudy Giuliani’s steps on that fateful day.

8:46am American Airlines Flight 11 hits the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

8:46am to 9:03am Giuliani is eating breakfast at the Peninsula Hotel when he is told that there is a large fire in the North Tower of the World Trade Center. He leaves for Ground Zero and attempts to call the Governor’s office but does not have cell reception.

9:03am Hijacked United Airlines flight 175 hits the South Tower of the World Trade Center.

9:03am to 9:37am In Greenwich Village, Giuliani learns about the second attack. He arrives at the World Trade Center and realizes that the Office of Emergency Management, housed within No. 7 World Trade Center is inaccessible. The New York Fire Department sets up a command post on the West Side Highway and the New York Police Department sets up a command post at 75 Barclay Street.

9:37am American Airlines Flight 77 hits the west wall of the Pentagon.

9:37am to 9:59 am Giuliani comdeers the offices at 75 Barclay Street where the NYPD have set up their command center.

9:59am The South Tower collapses.

10:28am The North Tower collapses.

10:57 am Giuliani attempts to hold a makeshift press conference over the phone in a live interview with local news channel, New York 1.

2:49pm Giuliani holds an official press conference, letting New Yorkers know subway and bus service has been partially restored. When asked about the number of casulaties, he answers, “I don’t think we want to speculate about that — more than any of us can bear.”

11:00pm Giuliani returns to Ground Zero after giving his last orders for the night.
