George Soros, the billionaire financier, says he thinks the euro and the European Union itself are at risk of breaking up if Germany refuses to play its traditional role and make concessions, Reuters reported, citing an interview conducted with Italian newspaper.

“The Germans have always made the concessions needed to advance the European Union, when people were looking for a deal. Not any more,” Mr. Soros told Corriere della Sera in an interview published on Thursday.

“That’s why the European project is stalled. And if it can’t go ahead from here, it will go backwards. It’s important to understand that if you don’t make the next steps forward for the euro, the euro will go to pieces and the European Union too,” he said.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Iran may be able to build a missile capable of striking the United States by 2015, according to an unclassified Defense Department report on Iran’s military sent to Congress and released on Monday.

“With sufficient foreign assistance, Iran could probably develop and test an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the United States by 2015,” said the April report, a copy of which was obtained by Reuters.

A classified version was also submitted to Congress.

The timing of advances in Iran’s long-range missile technology is being closely watched in Washington, which accuses Tehran of pursuing nuclear weapons and is pushing for a new round of sanctions. Iran denies the charges and says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

“Iran’s nuclear program and its willingness to keep open the possibility of developing nuclear weapons is a central part of its deterrent strategy,” the report said.

The so-called “birther bill” won initial approval from the House of Representatives on Monday, advancing legislation that would require presidential candidates to produce a birth certificate before they can make the ballot in Arizona.

The legislation originated from a fringe group that believes President Barack Obama is not a natural-born citizen of the United States and therefore ineligible to be president.

Rep. Judy Burges amended Senate Bill 1024 to include a requirement that Arizona’s Secretary of State inspect a presidential candidate’s birth certificate before that candidate could qualify for the ballot.

Similar laws have been proposed in Oklahoma, Florida and Missouri. None have been signed into law.

As technology grows more sophisticated and the government and its corporate allies further refine their methods of keeping tabs on the American people, those of us who treasure privacy increasingly find ourselves engaged in a struggle to maintain our freedoms in the midst of the modern surveillance state.

Just consider the many ways we’re already being monitored and tracked: through our Social Security numbers, bank accounts, purchases and electronic transactions; by way of our correspondence and communications devices-email, phone calls and mobile phones; through chips implanted in our vehicles, identification documents, even our clothing. Data corporations are capturing vast caches of personal information on you so that airports, retailers, police and other government authorities can instantly identify and track you. Add to this the fact that businesses, schools and other facilities are relying more and more on fingerprints and facial recognition to identify us. All the while, banks and other financial institutions must verify the identities of new customers and make such records of customer transactions available to the police and government officials upon request.

In recent years, this information glut has converged into a mandate for a national ID card, which came to a head with Congress’ passage of the REAL ID Act in 2005. REAL ID requires states to issue machine-readable drivers’ licenses containing a wealth of personal data. However, because the REAL ID Act has been opposed by many states due to its cost and implementation, we have yet to be subjected to a nationwide implementation of a national ID card. That may all change depending on what happens with the immigration reform bill now before Congress.

When I say “a typical Toronto office,” I mean that about an hour into news coverage of the attack, the young woman sitting next to me — a smart, attractive, funny blonde in the Reese Witherspoon mold — blurted sourly, without looking up from her paperwork: “Jezuz, you’d think a building had never blown up before…”

On April 5, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review Homaidan Ali Al-Turki's conviction on charges of forced slavery and sexual abuse. But the story here is not the criminal behavior of Al-Turki or even a growing number of similar cases of domestic slavery. It is the brazen attempt by the Saudi government to hinder U.S. law enforcement by positing Al-Turki, absurdly, as the victim of anti-Muslim and anti-Arab bias.

Their "evidence," set forth in their request to file an amicus curiae brief, consisted of a combination of questionable allegations and unsubstantiated assertions:

Here, a potential juror expressed a bias against Muslims. The court did not question the juror about this bias and refused to allow Petitioner to question the juror. In light of the prevalence of anti-Muslim and anti-Arab sentiment in the United States, this case was one in which there was a "significant likelihood" that racial, ethnic, and/or religious bias might taint jury deliberations and impair the jurors' ability to be fair and impartial.

The argument first avers that a "juror expressed bias." In actual fact, the Colorado appeals court that affirmed Al-Turki's conviction found that prior to serving, the juror in question "did not evince any concerns of bias toward defendant or the Islamic religion." Nor did his comments afterward "unequivocally express actual bias against defendant or his religion."

More significantly, the argument offers no substantive evidence to prove its central premise of prevalent "anti-Muslim and anti-Arab sentiment in the United States," much less how that would relate to the case at hand.

But by far the most egregious aspect of the brief was the kingdom's temerity in lecturing the United States on the evils of discrimination in the trial setting. Saudi Arabia is a theocracy whose trial procedures, as explained in the Department of State's 2009 Country Report on Human Rights Practices, explicitly accord second-class status to all non-Muslims and women:

The testimony of one man equals that of two women; judges may discount the testimony of non-practicing Sunni Muslims, Shia Muslims, or persons of other religions; and female parties in court proceedings such as divorce and family law cases must deputize male relatives to speak on their behalf unless they decide to speak for themselves.

Saudi Arabia's brief was simply another Islamist attempt to chill law enforcement with unsubstantiated accusations of racism. This time, however, the Saudi glass house is on full display.

Senators urge stepped-up Mexico border security

Washington (CNN) — Sens. Jon Kyl and John McCain, both Republicans from Arizona, called Monday for the immediate deployment of 3,000 National Guard troops to the border with Mexico and other steps to increase security.

Illegal aliens crossing the border into Arizona from Mexico were causing a spike in crime and other problems that needed immediate attention, said Kyl and McCain at a news conference with two Arizona sheriffs.

Global Muslim Brotherhood

A local media article defending the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) provides an opportunity to examine how the U.S. Muslim Brotherhood manipulates the media in its own interests. According to an article carried on the Indianapolis Star website:

But ISNA isn’t without its detractors. It has been a frequent target of attacks from bloggers and authors who specialize in criticizing Muslim groups. Last month, author and frequent ISNA critic Steven Emerson testified before a House subcommittee that FBI investigations in the 1980s linked ISNA to members of the Muslim Brotherhood, a fundamentalist group with a violent past. Last year, federal prosecutors in a Texas terrorism case referred to ISNA in court documents as an unindicted co-conspirator. ISNA has long denied any involvement with covert or illegal activity. It says it is not part of the Muslim Brotherhood and is suing to get the co-conspirator reference expunged from court documents. It has signed off on declarations calling terrorism un-Islamic, built partnerships with Jewish groups and worked with the State Department, Homeland Security and the FBI as they seek to get Muslim help in fighting terrorism. ISNA representatives have even visited the White House and received visits from top administration officials, including former Bush adviser Karen Hughes. Mattson said the lingering criticism of ISNA is similar to the campaign of innuendo about Obama’s Muslim roots. She and other Muslims have long been convinced that Obama is not a Muslim and never has been. But that hasn’t stopped the rumors. “They use this same kind of guilt by association and remote linking to individuals through others, raising questions that have no basis in fact,” she said. “It shows, unfortunately, how deeply embedded fear of Muslims is in much of society.”
